Application in Divorce A general term, the word support is used to refer to money paid for the support of children or a spouse.

Spousal support is either short term or long term, and may be temporary, as when or divorce is in process, or permanent, when a marriage has lasted 10 or more years and the judge believes that the employment prospects of the dependent spouse are slim.

Short-term support is often rehabilitative, and it may be paid in a lump sum. This type of support is designed to ease the transition back into the work force.
